Best Frontpage Replacement Software and Web Hosting

You may have been using MS Frontpage to keep up your old business website since it was built, well, a long time ago in internet years.  Or, you may have bought or inherited an old website that was originally built in Frontpage.

You probably already know that Microsoft Frontpage has officially been discontinued by Microsoft, and they have abandoned ALL support for the product.  This move was due to numerous bugs involving the program and its extensions that Microsoft could never fix.

So what do you do in terms of finding a replacement software to use for Frontpage?

If you’re just looking for a Frontpage replacement then you’re probably just looking for the basics:

  • Import/convert a MS FrontPage website and “modernize it” (clean up the HTML to make it standards compliant, etc.)
  • Supports (or converts) the substitutions (Include Page and Text substitutions that are done when the page is published (so they become static HTML).
  • Leverages my knowledge of FrontPage

Expression Web will do what you need to do. It should be comfortable for you to use since you’re familiar with the Microsoft UI paradigm. It also corrects a number of problems that the old Frontpage had.

Microsoft is releasing Web Matrix for free and it is okay, but not great.  You might want to try that out first and see if it meets your needs.

There are some other web editors out there that are probably better than Expression Web, but if you’re used to Frontpage the learning curve will be pretty high.

So if you decide to stay with Frontpage and Expression Web, finding a web host that still supports the Frontpage extensions can be tough.

InMotion still supports Frontpage and is the way to go if you’re looking for web hosting for Frontpage.   Web hosting provider Hostgator, one of the top web site hosting companies, offers Frontpage extensions support.  Hostgator makes it easy to install Frontpage extensions.  You can install the extensions by just going into your cPanel and clicking ‘Install FrontPage Extensions’ on the desired domain or subdomain.

Why not move away from web editors all together and move to an open source Content Management System?

If you’re starting your website from scratch, why not use WordPress instead?

The problems with using FrontPage, Dreamweaver, etc are standards and botched coding that make people directly edit the code anyway. Most people don’t want to get into coding.  That’s why CMS systems like WordPress are so popular now days.  I read a recent 2012 article that said 25% of websites are now build in WordPress.

Why?

Here’s a list of reasons why WordPress is the best way to quickly, easily, and cheaply build a website:

The themes – WordPress includes free themes that are very good.  Your site looks professional right from the beginning.  The themes are most likely a top reason people use WordPress over other ways to build a website.

There’s also premium themes. A big market has started around paid WordPress themes.  You can buy some really good ones for around $50 or so. Even if you don’t want an out-of-the-box theme, you can still use one of the many frameworks available to build your site around, thus saving time (and money!).

The WordPress Community – The WordPress community is awesome. They’re the people who help you when you get stuck, make the free themes you use on your blog, develop the plugins you rely on and ultimately make the platform you use.

It’s worth mentioning the license WordPress uses — the General Public License – which gives you immense freedom to do more or less anything you want.

Because WordPress is so easy to use.

The chief reason to use WordPress remains its ease of use and flexibility. If you want to build a blog, a business website, or a small personal site, or a simple ecommerce site (read this site  or  this site before you buy a SSL certificate for your ecommerce site)  – WordPress is the way to go.  It takes me about thirty seconds to install a new WordPress site with the right web host (see – click here).

Developments such as custom post formats have meant WordPress is now much more than a blogging platform; it’s now a fully fledged CMS and website building tool.

When I want to do something that would be more complicated, the vast number of plugins can just be dropped into my setup and allow me to do just about anything I could think of. If the plugin you want doesn’t exist, there’s likely to be someone with the same problem as you and a solution on its way.

I use WordPress for clients because it is easier for them to understand and use; It has elements that non-technical users are more familiar with which is why I like using it with any of my clients/friends.
